Breaking News Northern Japan Rocked by M7.5 Earthquake Authorities warn of possible megaquake

A magnitude 7.5 earthquake struck off the coast of Aomori late Monday, producing strong shaking in Hachinohe and injuring at least six people. Tsunami warnings were issued for parts of Aomori, Iwate, and Hokkaido, with waves up to 70 cm observed before advisories were lifted early Tuesday. Long-period ground motions affecting high-rise buildings were also recorded.
Japan’s Meteorological Agency has now issued a rare alert for a potential megaquake, warning that a follow-up M8-class event could occur along the Japan Trench or Chishima Trench during the next week. Authorities urge residents to review evacuation routes, prepare emergency kits, and remain vigilant. Shinkansen services north of Morioka were temporarily suspended, while nuclear plants reported no abnormalities.
